Association of Lawyers with Disabilities in Nigeria (ALDIN) had an engagement with the President and other top officials of the National Industrial Court (NIC).
This is part of ALDIN’s project of opening up the space in the legal profession for persons with disabilities.
The project is with the support of Disability Rights Fund (DRF). We are really making headway, to the glory of God Almighty, the helper of the helpless.
On Friday January 17th, the Association of Lawyers with Disabilities in Nigeria (ALDIN) led by our National President Barr Daniel Onwe had a working visit and meeting with the President of National Industrial Court and his team.
The purpose/agenda of the meeting was the promotion of inclusive justice administration/deliveries and ensuring the effective implementation of the Disability Act in Nigeria.
When we arrived, there was no ramp through which our colleague on wheelchair could access the elevator. No cognizance that wheelchair users including lawyers on wheelchairs are also part of the people that would be making use of the building as a public structure.
Four hefty men had to carry the colleague on wheelchair up the steps to the elevator door.
The meeting was eventful as the NIC president gave us rapt attention as we took them on the issues/problems, recommendation and practice directions(including draft of proposed practice directions) led by our erudite and committed president.
The response was assuring as the NIC team led by their president promised to look into and address the issues raised using the recommendations and practice directions.
